Kindergarten Gradual Entry for Early September

Dear Parents,

We are so excited to have your children starting Kindergarten at Huband in September!

As you may be aware, the first two weeks do not follow a regular schedule.  We are piloting a new gradual entry program with the intent to make the transition to Kindergarten easier for both parents and children.  The main part of this pilot is to establish a connection between you, your child, and their teacher, so we are requesting that you participate with your child in this process (grandparents or other relatives could come in your place).   We understand that this process may be challenging for parents who work, but this is one of the most important times in your child’s whole educational journey – we want to set up your child for success!

Please find attached a personalized schedule which shows which group your child has been added into for the first few days of gradual entry.  The general schedule for the whole gradual entry process builds up time for your child at school.  We have found that this is the most successful starting process.  The outline for gradual entry is as follows:

Tuesday, Sept. 3:

Children will come in three separate groups for 45 minutes at a time, with their parents.
We will meet you in the GYM for activities and get-to-know you time.

(See attachment for which group your child is in)

Group 1: 9:00-9:45 am

Group 2: 10:00-10:45 am

Group 3: 10:50-11:35 am

Wednesday, Sept. 4:

Children will come in the same three groups again for 1 hour at a time, with their parents
We will meet in the GYM again.

Group 1: 8:45am-9:45am

Group 2: 10:00am-11:00am

Group 3: 11:15am-12:15pm

** Please note that Tuesday and Wednesday are temporary class groups. The purpose is to best match teachers and kids.  It is our intention to have classes established on Thursday.  We will confirm your child's class placement, as well as the remainder of their gradual entry schedule at that time.

Thursday, Sept. 5:

Welcoming Conversations will be held with each child, their parents, and their teacher(s).
You only come to school with your child this day for your conversation.
Please see attached schedule for your individual time.

Please bring the completed form called “My Child’s Story”, as this will guide our conversation.  We will also have Welcoming Conversations in the afternoons on Friday, Sept. 6 and Monday, Sept. 9 for those who do not attend a Welcoming Conversation on this day.

We are looking forward to learning about your hopes and dreams for your child and addressing any concerns you may have during these 20-minute conversations.  If you are unable to make your designated time, please let us know towards the end of August.  We will try to reorganize these conversations to meet your needs.

Friday, Sept. 6 and Monday, Sept. 9

Children will come to their designated classroom in one of two groups.
Both groups should bring a snack. These groups A and B are still to be determined and we will communicate that to you as soon as we have finalized the class lists.

Group A: 8:45am-10:15 am

Group B: 10:45am-12:15 pm

Welcoming Conversations will be held for those who did not attend a meeting on Thursday.

Tuesday, Sept. 10 and Wednesday, Sept. 11:

Children will come to their classroom for the full morning or afternoon (schedule TBD).

Thursday, Sept. 12 onward:

Children will be attending school for full days (8:45am-2:30 pm).  Snack and lunch needed.

We look forward to meeting with you and your child. Thank you for your support as we work together to provide a successful transition to Kindergarten.  Please remember that gradual entry is designed to make your child’s entry to school as smooth as possible.  It is also designed to build connection between you, your child and his/her teacher.  Please enjoy a restful summer break and we look forward to seeing your family on September 3rd in our gym at your group 1 or 2 or 3 time (schedule attached).
